Once we have arranged an interview for
you, make sure you have a written note of the families’ name, address and interview details. Work out any travel instructions
you may need so you know where you are going. It is a good idea, if possible, to do a practise run before your interview.
Also make sure you take along your CV and original copies of your qualifications, first aid certificate, CRB check and any
written references, which you have.
An interview for a childcare position is
usually much more relaxed than those in other professions but nevertheless it
is still important to arrive on time (if not a little early), be polite and give it your best.
Be prepared that, depending on the time,
the children may well be present at the first interview. If this is the case use this as your first chance to shine! Talk
directly to the children and ask about their favourite toys and what activities they enjoy etc. It will be noticed how well
you interact with them. A first impression counts so make it a good one and remember you are there to prove you are the best
person for helping raise these children.
Interviews can vary greatly depending on
the family, some will ask lots of questions while others may just prefer
to have a chat and get to know you. Below we have included some examples of questions that you may be asked. Use them to prepare
yourself but don’t rehearse your answers word for word, just answer honestly and as your natural self. Bear in mind
that these are just examples and you may well be asked anything.
- How long have you been in childcare?
- Why did you go into childcare?
- What do you enjoy about working with children?
- What are your strengths when working with children?
- What ages of children have you worked with?
- What was involved in your previous positions?
- What key things do you consider important for a happy relationship between childcarer and family?
- What are your views on discipline, manners etc?
- Can you suggest some age related activities for my children?
- Can you cook? What sort of meals can you prepare
- What would you do if……( made up various problems or emergency situations)
- Have you ever had to deal with a medical emergency? If so, what did you do?
- Why did you or why are you leaving your previous / present job?
- Explain any gaps in employment
Make sure you ask questions back, especially
about anything you are not clear on. Childcare interviews should be a two way process. With the nature of this work it is
important that you know every aspect of the job and get a feel for how it would be on a day to day basis. You will usually
know by instinct when you have found the right job and family – remember though, they do not always both come together!
If the job does not seem right for you then do not be afraid to say so.
Make sure you ask the parent’s views
on things such as behaviour, discipline etc. Are they similar to yours? Also clarify what will be expected of you, exact hours,
holiday, sick pay etc.
We will contact you as soon as possible
after an interview for your feedback. Whilst we will strive to get a perfect match first time this cannot be guaranteed. If
you do not feel the position is suitable, your comments will be of assistance to us in trying to find you another position
you feel is more what you are looking for.
